Challenging Silver – Influence of Extraction Medium on the Release of Silver from a Wide Range of Commercial Silver Dressings

چکیده
A number of antimicrobial silver dressings based on different substrates and silver technologies have been introduced recently. Initial in vitro testing of a new cost-effective silver dressing* showed a strong dependence between silver release and the ionic strength and organic content of the extraction solution. To answer the question if all silver dressings show similar dependence on extraction medium, a number of commercial dressings were tested using simulated wound fluid (SWF =142mM sodium chloride and 2.5mM calcium chloride in water) and SWF plus 5% bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the extraction media. Silver elution as a function of solution composition and time was measured using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The source of silver and the composition of the extraction medium were found to strongly affect the release of silver. Apparent equilibria established between silver and halide-containing salts (e.g. chloride ions) were disrupted by the presence of 5% BSA. * Tritec Silver by Milliken Healthcare Products LLC, Spartanburg, SC

Production and Characterization of Gelatine Based Electro-spun Nano-fibres as Burn Wound Dressings
Silver sulfadiazine is used to prevent and treat infections of second- and third-degree burns. It kills a wide variety of bacteria. In this study silver sulfadiazine was used in gelatin based electro-spun nano-fibers with various drug to polymer ratios (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 %). SEM, EDX and FTIR analysis showed that the continuous, bead-free, fine fibers containing silver sulfadiazine as an anti...

متن کاملIn vitro assessment of the antimicrobial activity of wound dressings: influence of the test method selected and impact of the pH
Antibacterial activity of dressings containing antimicrobials is mostly evaluated using in vitro tests. However, the various methods available differ significantly in their properties and results obtained are influenced by the method selected, micro-organisms used, and extraction method, the degree of solubility or the diffusability of the test-compounds. Here, results on antimicrobial activity...

Bioleaching processes for extraction of Cu and Mo from molybdenite cons. are more environmentally friendly and consume less energy than conventional technologies, yet less economically efficient. One necessary step towards arriving at a cost-effective bioleaching process is using appropriate methodology to optimize pertinent factors in such processes. To this end, the present study employed Res...
